It is with great sadness that we pass on the very upsetting news of Geoff Cunliffe’s death.
Geoff had been county secretary for Hampshire for several years, as well as an ESAA General Committee member, and was always enthusiastic in everything he was involved with, especially as a team manager for England teams. He always had ideas to improve the way we did things and how to improve competition and possibilities for our young athletes, as well as offering advice to those involved in managing the sport.
Geoff had been suffering from cancer for some time, and was being treated for it over the last few months. Unfortunately, he had a bad fall, smashing his artificial hip, which meant that he became much worse in his health very rapidly. He went into hospital, but it quickly became clear that his health had deteriorated so much that he was taken off his treatment and slowly slipped away in a very short period of time.
Many people will have stories to tell of their relationship with Geoff, and we should make time to tell them when we are together, perhaps at the Association’s ACM formally, but definitely informally whenever we are together at events and meetings. It brings home to us how tenuous our hold on life can be at times, and we should celebrate our friendships just as we will celebrate our friendship with Geoff.
Our thoughts are with his family and friends.
